Actual ReviewGame introduction:
Flame Rumble X is the fourth game in the Flame Rumble series of Reborn based games. The main story line follows the Melone Base infiltration arc of the Future arc in Reborn!. It features 50 playable characters (15 making their first appearance in this game), as well as 25 support characters. (7 characters overlap, meaning they are available as both playable and support.)
As with the previous games in the series, this game features the following modes:
~Story Mode: Includes the Main Story which follows the plot of the anime as well as various other single or multiple character based stories. You can unlock playable and support characters as well as other story modes here.
~Arcade Mode: Play as one character through a ten battle series. Certain characters may unlock more playable characters upon completion.
~Battle Mode: Play against up to 3 CPU players in either Survival or KO Count matches. Training Mode is also available here.
~Family Battle Mode: Put together a four character team and play against other CPU controlled teams. Apparently in this game they changed it from a tournament style setting that you can change the difficulty of to an apparent unending series of battles of increasing difficulty.
~Match Play: Wireless play against other players who have the game, using both Battle and Family Battle modes
All modes can be set on Easy, Medium, or Hard difficulty. (Except Family Battle)
Also, using coins earned through all of these modes, you can unlock tons of extra content including background music files, character voice clips, character sprites, event graphics, and anime screen shots as well as support characters and even playable characters.
For this game, the battle system has been improved by:
1) A general gameplay speed up
2) Addition of aerial combos
3) Addition of Aerial Recovery
4) Addition of Escape Guard (Hold guard and press a direction to dash past your opponent) and Counter Guard (Hit Guard just as your opponent lands an attack to stun them for a brief moment and give you a counter opportunity)
5) Combination Attacks: Certain special moves give you the opportunity to combine your support character into the attack, giving a chance for extra effects and/or damage, depending on the support character. This will use up your support character’s one use though.
A new feature to story mode is that in certain places in the story, you will have the opportunity to choose one out of a set of characters to use in the upcoming battle. Different characters unlock different things at the end of the battle. On the Story Selection screen there is a Story Flow chart that keeps track of which characters you have used at these instances, so you can know which ones you have yet to use and which items you have yet to unlock. Unlockable items (aside from those unlocked at the end of the story) show up as “!”s on the Flow Chart.
This is definitely the best game in the series so far, with plenty of awesome characters and content. The only thing is that it’s in Japanese you have to import it or use a flash cart to play it. Which makes the multi-player mode generally useless as there is no WiFi mode. And no knowing when we’ll get an English version because the anime itself hasn’t even been licensed yet.
Also one wonders why we haven’t had things like aerial combos in the previous games. Seems rather basic. The company is probably trying to stretch out the series by withholding features.
