Although, this is a blessing and a curse. I don't appreciate the censorship, yes, but at least we MIGHT be able to see some original ideas that don't rely on fanservice to get somewhere.

While this is certainly alarming, I think we won't have to worry TOO much. First off, we all know by now that this ban was put forth and supported by a bunch of senior citizen members who are homophobic and prejudiced against anybody who reads manga or watches anime, up to the point where they considered them 'low lives.' Hell, Shintaro Ishihara remarked that gays were 'pitiful' and 'genetically defective' and combined with this bill will probably face serious backlash.

Also, look how it only mentions anime/manga but not real photography or other items. This will probably be called out as well.

Also note that the titles aren't so much 'banned' as they are 'restricted' now - they'll still be sold in 'adult' corners of shops, and while that might decrease sales somewhat, overall people will probably still buy them. Hell, kids might get around it still.

The school uniform ban is the most baffling, and will probably be the most short-lived. I'd say around 80% of manga/anime involves high-school settings and characters, and if they plan on getting rid of that they'll be dealing a serious crippling blow to the anime/manga industry.

Also keep in mind that the law doesn't take effect until July 2011; there is quite an amount of time to deal with, fight, or even possibly overturn it. Keep in mind that anime/manga has become a rather large part of Japan's economy, and has become quite popular in other countries as well. While we've already seen a lot of publishers, mangaka, and other prominent individuals involved boycott events and stand up to the government, there is a small chance other countries might get involved as well due to how popular anime/manga is worldwide (though this chance is small.)

If anything, all this bill has proven is how senile/angry Ishihara and his fellow governers/political figures are, and as you can see there has already been a HUGE outcry against it, as well as a gigantic amount of people fighting against it right away. Even if they cannot do anything about it, the ban WILL cause some devastation to Japan's economy and cause some problems for other countries, leading to the bill being incredibly short-lived, if it even does manage to live that long in light of all the people right now fighting it.

I don't think we'll have to worry. All this has really accomplished was putting a nice big stain on Ishihara and the government's otherwise pretty decent reputation. This ban will probably not last long at all, if it isn't repealed by the time July roles around.

According to this article, the bill hasn't exactly passed yet. It was approved by a committee and has a formal vote on Wednesday.

Comic theatrics aside, if they're going to make the anime and manga industry come to a screeching halt, the effects could be rippling all across the world considering that anime and manga are popular. I wouldn't mind so much if they censored mature content, but the news of this is just shocking.

Banning one form of media restricts all else. There was a filmmaker or a film staff worker who once said that all media are one.

On the flip side, I'm interested to see what could happen if Tokyo did ban their anime and mangas. Would Korea then step up in their manhwa industry? Would American comics flourish? Or would creative individuals publish their own pseudo-anime and manga?

It's funny how Ishihara is all "oh people think homosexual is okay now in the past it was wrong" when Japanese history has had countless examples of homosexual interactions or instances, even among prominent figures to the point where it was commonplace. Hell, warlord Oda Nobunaga had a male lover who was only 17 named Ranmaru Mori, so it's kinda funny seeing the politicians acting as if it's something new to their country.

And yes Zags, that's the same bill. Also, looking at the opposition and everyone's whole 'whatever' attitude towards it,(with Jump even saying they'll publish it anyways if they think it's good) I don't think we'll have to worry about this one terribly.

Fun fact: after reading through it a biiit more, it appears that the bill will rely on self-regulation except in "extreme cases" (rape, for example) so basically, it will be up to the studios themselves to decide what they do. (Thus Jump's reaction, and the general "Fuck dis shit" attitude.)

Ahh, so basically it's not so much a law as it is "Hey guys look things over a bit more than normal please okay?" thing.
